What's New?

Latest and Greatest:

Well the buzz is picking up on Autism isn't it. Wow. It is a good thing I conclude. Seems like there are so many books and celebs throwing their hat in the ring now.  It can be even harder now to find the answers...the truths.  My opinion is to watch out and look to the masters who have been working in the field for years. There you will find the answers. When I browse my bookstore I see all the famous faces stacked up. The talk shows are brimming with the topic. I have had people ask me if I "have seen the interview with so and so...did you know he/she has a boy with Autism?" or tell me they "know what autism is cause they saw the show about it one day" Well all well and good. The word is out. The topic is on the TV in the papers and has moved into the light. Now what? This should take some of the mystery out of the condition when dad begin to talk about it with others. There is nothing to be ashamed of. You should just expect that people will be interested, they will have limited knowledge of the topic based on what they heard or read -so be patient. Avoid the buzz about diets, and all of that wonderful stuff. Just be kind and gage just how much info to share -people in general will be looking to pick up some association or tid-bit to chat about -on the bright side this new found awareness does put you in the limelight to some extent. I can only hope for you all that you have an easier time explaining to others the demands placed on you to balance home with work and social commitments.

Take it slow. Be smart. Be cautious of others sources. Try not to buzz around. BE THE SMART PARENT! Just cause someone is a celebrity of some sort doesn't mean they are anywhere close to holding the answers. Again - look to the pros for truth and practice -read the face books for entertainment. End of vent.

HELP!!!

Hey anyone out there holding a piece of land someplace that would like to gift it to this aspiedad and his son? This is a plea for help. We are just the average Aspie's with a dream. We are looking for a rural area. Our dream of an Aspie sanctuary among the crops and/or trees is beginning to fade along with our economic situation. We have lot's of energy, enthusiasm, appreciation of pride in ownership, respect for the planet, and willing to work our butts off to preserve and share with others - I place this out here to ask for help. It is a difficult thing for a man to have to ask for anything - trust me  -reluctance, pride, and sadness over this doesn't even come close to how I feel about placing this out here in front of the world. If you can help us (please) drop us an email at aspiedad@aspiedad.com. Thanks -We are wide open to suggestions!

Who are all these "Aspiedad's" out there? suddenly a search on Google turns up a pile of us. Some are clever sorts that add caps or underscores and various other numbers or things to lay claim to the register or something - well I am flattered that the title has been adopted to some extent and annoyed equally. Allow me to retort:

Let me go on the record as the one and only "aspiedad" the all lowercase guy named Jack who lives in Minnesota with his now 13 year old son. I am not the blogger, not the poor soul that turns up on search that needs a hug, I do not have anything to do with prisoners, and I certainly don't post anywhere on any sites but my own -(this one) or discussions boards. I congratulate the guys out there speaking up on their world - more need to - just beware of copyrights...gents.

If anyone does want my opinion of anything or wants to converse Aspie -well drop me a note...I love to talk Aspie.

Elsewhere: I found a pretty good Asperger's board while surfing though that is worth your time. I hope the hosts won't be offended if I mention the place here. I can't put a link without permission -so that's that- but do check it out -from what I paged through there seem to be some nice folks there.

ADD/ADHD now one diagnosis recording, also changes effect overall rating of IQ scores in evaluations due to addition of cognition ability

  • ADD/ADHD now recorded according to APA as one diagnosis (ADHD) and using identifiers such as "Predominantly Inattentive" to designate the type. (more on this in Asperger's in dad talk too).

  • Changes to IQ evaluation reporting scale effect overall IQ rating mostly lower than before for Asperger's children due to the addition of cognitive ability when factoring the total overall score. This is due to the updated test methods used. This can be shocking to some of us with older evaluations to see this score reflected as a lower than it was before.

"Combating Autism Act" Passes U.S. Senate by Unanimous. Today On August 3, 2006, the U.S. Senate passed S. 843, the "Combating Autism Act," shortly before recessing. This comprehensive legislation contains many important provisions to strengthen autism research, including a renewed investment into basic and clinical research, expanded research into the link between environmental factors and autism, and continued investigations into causation, diagnosis, early detection and treatment for autism spectrum disorders.

The Combating Autism Act is the first disease-specific legislation passed out of the HELP Committee in more than six years, said ASA President and CEO Lee Grossman. We look forward to working with our Senate sponsors and our champions in the House of Representatives to see this bill through to the President's desk?

The bill now goes to the House for consideration in September. Please alert your representatives of this bill and urge them to co-sponsor it.  Attend your town hall meetings and e-mail them today.

For more information on the bill, visit http://www.autism-society.org/.  For details on the bill, please visit http://www.thomas.loc.gov/ and search "S.843."                                                                                                    Back to Top
